Yuval Levin: A week of “pathetic journalistic malpractice”

by Horatius on September 3, 2008

I have always tended to think that conservative complaints about the media are a little exaggerated. . . . But this week has changed my view. I have never seen, and I admit that I could never have imagined, such shameful, out-of-control, frenzied, angry, condescending, and pathetic journalistic malpractice. The ignorant assault on Palin’s accomplishments and experience, the breathless careless airing of deranged rumors about her private life, the staggeringly indecent mistreatment of her teenage daughter in a difficult time, the ill-informed piling on about the vetting process . . .

Levin is right on. The obscene behavior of the media — ok. the mainstream media —is a huge discredit to them.
If anyone had any doubts remaining about whether media coverage is fair, they need only look at the pass John Edwards got on his alleged love child. It barely hit the news — after he was no longer running. If he were Republican, it would have been exposed and thoroughly milked while he was still a viable candidate.
The Palin coverage is vicious. Hopefully it will backfire against the left. Eastern establishment snobs always put down westerners. Just as they put GWB under the broiler, they dismissed Reagan as a stupid cowboy — but the Palin hatefest is the worst by far. A westerner, a pro-life woman, yet, and a reformer, all unforgivable in the eyes of the elite power structure. And charismatic to boot. Good grief!

Go Mrs. Palin–show ‘em what you got tonight! All those detractors trashing you personally and trashing your loved ones are doing that because they are SHAKING IN THEIR BOOTS at your nomination as VP.

They *know* you are a serious contender and a HUGELY POSITIVE addition to the McCain ticket.

They’re scared. It shows.

Don’t let ‘em get you down.

Well, she left them breathless last night. By “them” I mean the Fox News talking heads, Mort Kondracke et al. Kondracke can always find something negative to say, and usually does, but he couldn’t after she got through last night. I think it was Chris Wallace who said “a new political star” was born last night.

The female “talking head” — was that Nina Totenberg? — a lib, anyway, started to say Palin did a good job of reading the talk “that was written for her” — but Brit Hume cut in and brought the woman up short, reminding her that ALL politicians’ speeches are written for them, but with their input, and that it was her thoughts, her poise, her story and her delivery that made the talk exceptional. And she knocked it out of the park.
