Texas CPS not sure how many FLDS kids were in custody

by Kurt Schulzke on September 6, 2008

After November, with more free time, maybe Barack Obama can work on a new memoir, “The Audacity of Texas CPS.” Deseret News reports “Texas CPS now believes it had 439 children in state custody, not 440 as the agency has reported for months.” And, quoting CPS spokesman Patrick Crimmins yesterday:

There isn’t a simple explanation for that number changing by one child. It’s been a very complicated case, it remains a complex case, and we think that number is 439 instead of 440.”

How about this simple explanation: Texas CPS is a cynical, corrupt, incompetent bureaucracy that the people of Texas should dismantle at the earliest opportunity.

Let’s not forget that these kids were supposed to be safer with CPS than with their mothers. Yet CPS cannot even figure out how many they grabbed. That, my friends, is the epitome of child neglect.

CPS has now non-suited 268 FLDS children. And then this jewel from the Des News Story:

“Approximately 197 children remain the subject of pending lawsuits.”

Approximately?! But never fear:

However, CPS could still be involved with the [families of non-suited children], Crimmins said. Many FLDS parents signed family service plans outlining the steps they will take to ensure their child is protected from abuse.

“There can be a safety plan that is not a court order,” he said Friday. “There can be a safety plan that requires CPS access.”

Surely these non-due process “safety plans” include a provision requiring parents to know how many children they have. And surely CPS is competent to oversee count since it is obviously so good at counting and keeping track of kids.
