Cuba controls the American presidency

Florida exit polls and today’s Miami Herald show yet again the power that Cuba exerts over the American presidency. This ironic political pathology — that Cuba effectively chooses American presidents, not the other way around — may be the real legacy of Jack and Bobby Kennedy . Today, they should be rolling over in their graves.

Yes, Cuban exiles — who are arguably more Cuban than American given their willingness to sacrifice U.S. foreign policy on the anti-Castro altar — would always hate Castro even without the Bay of Pigs and the Missile Crisis. But these two events seared anti-Castro hatred so indelibly into the Cuban-exile soul that nowadays, at election time, everything revolves around how well the candidates sell themselves as keepers of the anti-Castro flame. For this we can thank JFK and his hot-head brother, Bobby, who were primarily responsible for both the Bay of Pigs and the Missile Crisis.

How did McCain win Florida? Governor Crist’s endorsement was obviously a big deal among whites. But let’s look at Hispanic and Cuban numbers in the New York Times exit poll. McCain’s total margin over Romney in Florida was about 95,000 votes. Cuban votes totaled 135,000 (7% x 1,925,728 total FL GOP votes). Of the Cuban vote, McCain took a whopping 54% (73K) to Romney’s 9% (12K). For McCain, that’s a 61,000-vote Cuban margin. McCain’s margin over Romney among Hispanics overall was 92,000. Romney won 14% of Hispanics compared to McCain’s 54%. I suspect that the vast majority of the non-Cuban Hispanics followed the Cuban lead in voting for McCain. If we equalize the Hispanic vote between Romney and McCain (by shifting 46,000 Hispanic votes to Romney) we’re down to a 3,000-vote total McCain margin (95K-92K) and it’s time to count chads.

How did McCain win over the Cubans? Like Fidel Castro and Adolf Hitler in their early days, McCain gave them an emotionally compelling narrative. According to a story in the Miami Herald, McCain defined himself as a fellow sufferer under the communist yoke by virtue of his time as a POW in Vietnam. Romney could never do this and obviously failed to sell a superior narrative. (No, of course I’m not comparing McCain to Castro or Hitler. Somebody else might, but I won’t.)

I found worthwhile this election-day video interview of some of Miami’s Cubans and this article in the Miami Herald. McCain’s huge margin among Florida Hispanics is a bad omen for Romney. Perhaps he can find a way to appeal to Hispanics elsewhere but given McCain’s open-borders schtick, it ain’t gonna be easy.

If the candidate is McCain, I’ll join Ann Coulter voting for Hillary. No way am I voting for McCain. At least if she is elected, the Republicans won’t take the blame for the mess that is sure to follow either choice.

I would like to see how the vote would have gone if Huckabee was out of it. (Well, yeah, he IS “out of it” but that is not what I mean.) His staying in there now, at the behest of the SBC is sticking in my craw.

Just read the WSJ..com blog comments on their article on McCain’s apostasies. Every single letter, and I read a dozen, says if McCain is the candidate, they will either sit it out, vote for Obama/Hillary, or write in another name. That was 100% the gist of their comments. Under no circumstances will conservatives for for this turkey. Me included. He is an out and out liar, and a professional smirker.

You know, I wonder if we should get a club for Mitt, if he is not the candidate. At least we could all write his name in instead of mickey mouse, or our own name.
I will NOT vote for mccain or huckamonster.
By the way, I agree with the above posts….
